TEAM NEWS

Picture perfect

ORACLE Racing is gracing the covers of notable sailing magazines. Yachting World in the UK has a picture of ORACLE Racing Spithill on its ear during the ACWS Plymouth Speed Trials. Germany’s Segel has a picture of ORACLE Racing Coutts flying the windward hull as the crew works upwind. Both magazines have lengthy feature stories accompanying the cover artwork.

The November issue of Seahorse (UK) carried Artemis Racing and Korea Team on its cover plus interviews with Russell Coutts and ACEA's technology boss Stan Honey. The continuing high levels of coverage show that the America's Cup is squarely back on the news agenda and that the switch to multihulls is generating great stories and stunning images.

The village takes shape

Peter Ansell is the Onshore Operation Director for the America´s Cup World Series and is managing the 12 person team in charge of setting the village up. His crew is working full time to have everything ready as soon as possible.

Watch a video: CW6 News reports on ACWS San Diego

“We´ve got about 108 shipping containers, although not all of them will come up here,” Ansell explains. “Some of them contain the RIBs and we need to do some work on them. The on-water guys have a program of maintenance that they´ve got to do on the boats, and then the boats will come directly by water from the terminal.”

The cargo vessel came straight from Plymouth via the Panama Canal and arrived in San Diego last week.

“In the last couple of days we´ve been discharging all the containers from the ship on to the dock side of the marine terminal so all of that has been done in advance. All the containers now are at the dockside and now we are bringing the containers by truck and building the race village, including all the team bases, the ACTV compound...

“We said to the teams that everything will be up and running ready for them to go sailing by the 8th but we receive their shore crews on the 1st and they will do the next stage of the preparation,” says Ansell, who has a lifetime experience working in different global sports events that include Formula 1, Football World Cup and a few around the world sailing races.

THE CHALLENGERS' FILES

Quest for China’s Argonauts

By Alvin Sallay, South China Morning Post // Oct. 31, 2011

For the next year or more, Thierry Barot will scour the length and breadth of China looking for prospective sailors who can join the mainland's odyssey for America's Cup glory in 2013.

Hong Kong-based Frenchman Barot is not a modern-day Jason, the legendary Greek hero, leading the Argonauts in a perilous sea quest for the Golden Fleece. Yet, the mission to win the Challenger Series by the China Team comprising mainly mainland sailors is a task of massive proportions, one which Barot, the chief executive of the team, acknowledges will be as tough as that mythical adventure.

"The aim by 2013 is to have seven members of the 11-man crew from China. Right now, we only have a couple and the goal is to unearth athletes in China who are willing to take on one of the biggest challenges in world sport," says Barot, a 25-year America's Cup veteran.

His search will begin in earnest this week as the China Team - the crew only, and not the boat - take part in the fifth China Cup International Regatta in Shenzhen. Apart from keeping an eye on the racing, Barot will oversee a recruitment programme where he hopes to discover potential sailing talent that can man the yardarm.

The Chinese were sailing the seven seas well before Columbus even dreamed of going on his voyage of discovery. Barot hopes to draw on this proud history to find the sailors of today, failing which he will settle for a basketball player or rugby player.

"We are looking for former athletes, rowers, anyone with a sporting background," says Barot. "We want athletes because they have a competitive mentality. Before I became a sailor, I used to play rugby and I know how important the hunger to win is."

Volvo Ocean Race : Legendary duel reborn

Yachting: Legendary duel reborn
By Paul Lewis
Orginal Story on NZherald,

One of the oldest and keenest rivalries in New Zealand sport - the Peter Blake vs Grant Dalton duel around the world in Steinlager 2 and Fisher & Paykel - could be reprised in part at the beginning of the current Volvo ocean race in Alicante this week.

The two maxi ketches produced a thrilling duel around the globe in the 1989-90 version of the race, known then as the Whitbread, with their clash becoming New Zealand sailing legend. It was the precursor to New Zealand's America's Cup interests, awakening many Kiwis not already bitten by the sailing bug to the drama that can be played out on the high seas.
PAUL TODD/Volvo Ocean Race
Dalton skippered Fisher & Paykel, Blake (later Sir Peter) Steinlager 2 and both yachts have been refitted and will take part in the Volvo Ocean Race Legends regatta - the first of its kind for veterans of the first 10 Whitbread and Volvo races. The regatta will be raced from Tuesday night (NZT) to Saturday on in-shore courses and includes other well-known round-the-world racers like Heineken, Charles Jourdan, Rothmans, Berge Viking, Great Britain II (skippered by the great Chay Blyth again) and Kings Legend.
Blake, who died in 2001, will be represented on Steinlager by Dalton's current right-hand-man in the New Zealand Camper campaign - the highly respected Kevin Shoebridge.

Dalton is not sure what sort of shape Fisher & Paykel is in and said he'd check it out when he got to Alicante. "I have had to suffer 22 years of Kevin Shoebridge giving it to me about the Whitbread," said Dalton. "I don't want to cop it for another 22 years - not after we (F&P) led the Whitbread almost all the way round the world for most of that race.
"It'll be good to rekindle old rivalries although I'm a bit nervous about what state Fisher & Paykel is in. I won't know until I see her but some of the pictures I have seen of her made her look as though she has been more of a charter boat lately."
The 25m Farr-designed ketch is currently owned by Spain's Kino Quiroga and will be sailed by a mostly Spanish crew drawn from veterans who competed on Licor 43 (1981-82), Galicia 93 Pescanova (1993-94) and movistar (2005-6). Steinlager 2, however, sounds as if it is back in racing trim. After the Whitbread race in 1989-90, she was sold to Italian interests, then sold again to Belgian owners until, in 2003, a group of sailing philanthropists from Lugano in Switzerland decided to do up "Big Red" which had fallen into disrepair.
"The yacht was in poor condition but, even so, her fascination was unbeatable," said current owner Stefan Detjen in a previous interview. "We decided to save her from a sad end."
PAUL TODD/Volvo Ocean Race

The project cost vast amounts of money and many of the original group of 10 co-owners left as the bills mounted. Detjen carried most of the load and there are apparently now plans to return Steinlager 2 to New Zealand - although it is not clear whether she has a new owner here or whether it will be a visit only.

The duel between F&P and Steinlager 2 made sailing history - with Fisher & Paykel leading most of the time, only to be hauled in time and again by Blake as each port neared. On the second leg, Fisher & Paykel led for 26 days only to be overtaken by Steinlager 2 which handled the light air patches better and went on to win by 34 minutes. It was the same in the next leg - to Auckland - where the close finish lives long in memory and the final leg to Southampton was again a thrilling duel before Blake found a way to separate the two boats and win by 38 minutes.   Volvo Ocean Race site .

WMRT NEWS :Williams Keeps a Cool Head Going into Championship Decider

KUALA LUMPUR (28 October2011): Current World Match Racing Tour leader Ian Williams is leaning on past experience to keep a cool head as the series heads into the Championship decider, the Monsoon Cup, with just over six points separating the Brit and arch rivals Francesco Bruni and Torvar Mirsky.

The final event of the ISAF World Match Racing Tour ends at the Monsoon Cup, Malaysia on the 22 - 27 November 2011. Follow all the action on www.wmrt.com © 2011 World Match Racing Tour

Williams keeps a cool head going into the Monsoon Cup

by Monsoon Cup
KUALA LUMPUR (28 October2011): Current World Match Racing Tour leader Ian Williams is leaning on past experience to keep a cool head as the series heads into the Championship decider, the Monsoon Cup, with just over six points separating the Brit and arch rivals Francesco Bruni and Torvar Mirsky.

After a dominant mid-season catapulted Ian Williams (GBR) Team GAC Pindar to the top of the Tour standings, a recent run of comparative poor form has crept in – he was beaten 3-0 at the first opportunity in the knockout rounds at both the St Moritz Match Race and the Argo Group Gold Cup. Add the fact that Torvar Mirsky (AUS) The Wave Muscat won both those events together with Williams’ indifferent form at the Monsoon Cup over the past 3 years and he could be forgiven for feeling the pressure as he bids to claim a third world title.

The Brit though is not surprised that it’s come down to the last event especially after 2010 saw five teams head to Malaysia each with a legitimate title chance, but believes his experience will only serve to help him:“Looking back over the past years it’s always come down to the Monsoon Cup and has often been just three teams vying for the championship title. It’s also usually the team that wins the Monsoon Cup that wins the title so while there really is all to play for it’s not an unexpected position to be in.“We are definitely confident heading into the Monsoon Cup. We’ve been in this position before and it’s gone well for us in the past.”

While confident, Williams knows he’d be foolish to ignore the growing threat posed by Mirsky and that he needs to at least match the Australian’s form if he’s going to claim the Monsoon Cup and potentially his third title with it:“Torvar is really on a roll and is the guy on form going into the event so we really need to pick up our game and get our rhythm back."If his dip and Mirsky’s rise give possible cause for concern, Williams will be buoyed by his win rate against his nearest rivals this season – he has won 86% of his races against Bruni (ITA) Bruni Racing Team and 80% against Mirsky respectively. Small margins often decide match races and these statistics could be telling at an event where 1.5 times more points are on offer than the standard event points.

Williams will back those statistics up with typically meticulous preparation as he believes that if his team can produce their A-game then they can beat anyone including a resurgent Mirsky: “We just focus on our game because when we are sailing well we can beat anyone so we just focus on doing our job as best we can. We’ve sailed Bruni and Mirsky a lot over the past few years so we know them well and while every team have their traits - the areas they do well in or not so well in that you may look to exploit, the most important thing is that we focus on us.”“We’re going to Perth before Malaysia to get some practice in and then will hopefully get another 3-5 days in Kuala Terengganu before the event. It’s always good to get there early and prepare so we have time to get the feel of the boats again and come together as a team.”
Williams has turned his fortunes on the Tour around this season, something he puts down to being ‘a lot more professional’‘doing a few training events before the season’ and‘locking down [his] crew early and keeping it consistent’. The last time he won the Monsoon Cup in 2007 he also won the ISAF Match Racing World Championship. Time will tell if he has got his preparations right this season to repeat that double feat.
The 2011 ISAF Match Racing World Championship will be decided at the Monsoon Cup which takes place from 22-27 November in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia.

170 Set Sail from Shelter Island to Cabo in Baja Ha Ha

By: Log Staff
SAN DIEGO — Sailing vessels, big and small, began a 750-mile cruise from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico Oct. 24, for the 19th annual Baja Ha Ha Cruisers Rally.

The boats started their journey at the tip of Shelter Island at 10 a.m., where a blast from an official America’s Cup shotgun signaled the start of the rally.

The sailors will head down the Baja California peninsula, making stops in Bahia Tortugas (Turtle Bay), Bahia Santa Maria and Cabo San Lucas.

“Baja Ha Ha is a great way for sailing enthusiasts to get together and enjoy the recreational opportunities in San Diego Bay and south of the border,” said Ken Franke, president of the Sportfishing Association of California. “Each year, the event attracts new sailors from all over the West Coast.”

Since its inception, the Baja Ha Ha has attracted about 2,500 boats from as far north as Alaska. It has become the largest offshore sailing event on the West Coast and is billed as the second largest cruising rally in the world.

The Baja Ha Ha rally is open to all boats longer than 27 feet that have been designed, built and maintained for open ocean sailing. A minimum of two crewmembers with overnight and offshore experience must be aboard each vessel.

Americas Cup Sustainability News : Sir Peters Blakes Old Vessel arrives in San diego .

Research Vessel Arrives In San Diego

Area civic leaders welcomed to San Diego Thursday the crew of a research vessel on a three-year global expedition to study biodiversity in the oceans.
The 118-foot schooner with the Tara Oceans Expedition will remain in San Diego for three weeks to undergo repairs to its sails and replace one of its two engines. Scientists aboard the vessel will also spend time with colleagues at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla.

"San Diego cares deeply for the health of the ocean and San Diegans understand more than people in most other cities the role a healthy ocean can play in the environment," Mayor Jerry Sanders said.

Scott Peters, chairman of the Port Commission, issued the crew a proclamation.
The Tara, once owned by the late yachtsman Sir Peter Blake -- who won the America's Cup in 1995 in San Diego -- has been at sea since 2009 collecting data about the world's oceans and marine life.
Chief scientist Eric Karsenti said researchers have been collecting organisms and sending them to land to have their genomes mapped, and 70 percent of what they find are not included in their DNA database, a sign of the rich biological diversity in the oceans.

Researchers are also on a quest to find out what effect climate change is having on plankton.
"Plankton may be the base of the food chain, but they affect everything on top of them, and produce as much as 50 percent of the air we breathe," said Dr. Chris Bowler, one of the researchers on the Tara Oceans.
The crew has collected plankton samples from all over the world and about every month or so ships the samples back to labs in France.
The expedition, which is sponsored in part by the French National Center for Scientific Research, has a goal to map the various changes plankton are facing in the world's oceans which are being affected by climate change.

"One disturbing thing we found which we did not expect to find was plastic particles in the Antarctic. It's so far from human intervention and yet we're finding plastic particles there," Bowler said.
Tara scientists plan to use their time to promote future collaboration with Scripps Oceanography, Karsenti said.
They also will make presentations in local schools before departing Nov. 23 for Panama.
After their Panama stop, the ship will head for New York and then across the Atlantic Ocean to France in March 2012.

Americas Cup News :Drastic Changes To Race Format,.

@iSailmedia.com

Streamlining The Americas Cup World Series

In a Competitors forum held last week . It was agreed upon to limit the actual racing days to five at a venue.
This does not change the amount days the boats have access to the water for practice though .
That will still be the same . What it does change is that cost of the event running the TV and media parts , media boats , Course Marshalls, and the time a venues harbor is shut down , helicopter days,. race committee days needed on the water etc.

The AC Tv staff alone employs some 140 to 150 people to capture the event .That with three helicopters needed to be up  medical boats two umpires on Jet skis . The committee boat the two TV cats . Several VIP ribs provided to the teams for guest racers , Anywhere from ten to twelve photo boats , this all starts to add up . Nine days of racing is a long time and this move will allow the teams much needed practice time.

@isailmedia.com

It also comes at a time im sure some teams are blessing, with at least three boats a board the USS Constitution needing extensive  repair work from damages in Plymouth on the final Super Sunday we all now call it . Artemis racing as well as Green com have major damage .Alpeh as well not as critical .

@iSailmedia.com

Having basically cleaned out the ACRM spare parts trailer in Plymouth as well as a one complete boats hulls and wings were borrowed . That being boat eight of the Venetian challenge that was in its container .Core Builders have shipped at least one complete new wing and team China's wing is believed to have been sent back to NZL for repairs .Though San Diego not known for there high winds like the sound in Plymouth . ACRM will need to restock .

Also new is the team patch and templates this probably a move to standardize the using of the America's Cup logo by teams on there team gear and team merchandise.

All in a responsible and corporate event management descion these changes will insure a more efficient and cost efficient way for Venues to control the cost this great Venue has proved to be.
Only ten months well almost a year old in inception. The first two events Cascais And Plymouth were the test beds. Having proved there Global plan the Americas Cup World series has 14 events left . Im sure these wont be the last changes made. With the Announcement last week from Lunna Rossa That they will be trying to field a boat its not sure if they attended the Forum . No official announcement  has been made yet from The Golden Gate Yacht club .  Defending Host club . A application has to be made from and accepted as well as. The fees and purchase of a Ac45 . Like all the current competitors have fulfilled  . Luna Rossa  are a late entry .

America's Cup News:San Diego Dreaming

The World’s Best Sailors to Compete November 12-20
In less than three weeks, the America’s Cup World Series (AC World Series) will land in San Diego, a location known for its storied history with the America’s Cup. The nine-day event will mark the third stop in the 2011-2012 America’s Cup World Series, a new professional circuit that has been attracting sailing fans and non-sailors alike with its next generation racing speed machines, the AC45 wing-sailed catamarans.

"We're really excited about the San Diego event. As an American, having a chance to race in the US is always something I look forward to,” said Terry Hutchinson, Skipper, Artemis Racing. “Having the race course inside San Diego Bay gives us the opportunity to show what we do to more people than ever before, so that's also a big bonus and for Artemis Racing, this is another chance for us to hone our skills against top competition as we work towards the America's Cup in 2013."

With multiple vantage points dotted along the shoreline, the city is an ideal location to host the thousands of AC World Series spectators anticipated to watch the first racing of the America’s Cup World Series in the United States. Creating a live-action setting where fans can watch is a key element of this new America’s Cup cycle, and the configuration of San Diego Bay is ideal. There is also a full range of hospitality options for spectators seeking a full-service experience, featuring the America’s Cup Club on the Hornblower Inspiration, which will have an unparalleled view of the sailing action right in the heart of the action with premium benefits.
“San Diego Bay is a prime location for this series because the boats race closer to the shore than just about anywhere else,” said Scott Peters, Chairman, Board of Port Commissioners. “The area of San Diego Bay where the races will take place is located in the heart of San Diego, in downtown. Downtown has more than 100,000 residents and workers and many of them will be able to just walk down to the waterfront to observe the races close up.”

Fans will be greeted by new boats, new formats and a whole new level of racing. As seen at the first two events, the athletes are tested through both fleet and match races as well as Speed Trials that put a premium on physical and mental strength.

Racing begins on November 12-13 with the Port Cities Challenge, an event supported by the Mayors of each of the Port Cities - Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego. The preliminary showdown will allow competitors to gain a feel for the venue and fine-tune their speed. The weekend will culminate on Sunday afternoon with the awarding of the Port Cities Challenge Trophy to the winning team by one of the Port city mayors. In addition to the racing, the America’s Cup Village will be open from 10am to 6pm offering a range of food and beverage and interactive activities.

After two off days, the San Diego Match Racing Championship begins on Wednesday November 16 with three days of racing leading into the Final Championship. The highlight of the event is the final weekend, November 19 and 20, where the teams will compete for the titles of AC World Series San Diego Match and Fleet Race Champion, as well as for the chance to put points on the board for an overall 2011-12 AC World Series win.

Off the water, fans will be treated to a variety of activities and entertainment options at the AC Village with live music every evening,

access to sailing stars and interactive displays in a fun-charged festival atmosphere on shore, right at the water’s edge where the boats will be racing. The AC Village will be located on Harbor Drive and Broadway Pier, where fans can also visit ‘pit row’ and see the teams prepare for the day’s racing and crane their boats in and out of the water. The AC Village will be open from 10am to 10pm from November 16th to the 20th.

Entrance to the AC Village is a suggested donation of $10 to help support ocean conservation efforts. The America’s Cup has dedicated its global platform to raising awareness of the issues facing the health of our oceans worldwide and all proceeds of these donations will be split amongst the non-profit organizations who are partnering with the America’s Cup: OceanElders, Mission Blue, Aquarium of the Bay, Sailors for the Sea, and IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Televised to expose millions more fans to the sport of high-performance sailing, the AC World Series is a regular circuit of regattas that will bring America’s Cup-level racing and experience to top international venues. At the end of each AC World Series season, a champion will be crowned. These events provide the fans the only opportunity to see all of the America’s Cup competitors racing together.
The AC World Series will be sailed in the AC45, the forerunner to the next generation of America’s Cup boats, the AC72. Focused on creating more on-the-water excitement for both the teams and the fans, the AC45 wing-sailed catamaran was designed for both speed and close racing. While capable of closing speeds of over 30 mph, the AC45 remains nimble enough to handle the tight, tactical race courses planned by America’s Cup Race Management.

America'sCup News Napoli Celebrates Venue

Bagnoli Napoli Will be Last Round in ACWS

In 2013

Naples - The organizers of the America's Cup World Series of Naples came together to celebrate the reaching of an agreement that will bring the excitement of the America's Cup, and its protagonists, in the city in April 2012 and May 2013.

The Race Village will be in Bagnoli, a suburb west of Naples, which is affected by a major recovery plan and, in this context, the organizers are convinced that the America's Cup World Series will help accelerate this process.

Paul Graziano, president of the Industrial Union of Naples and CEO of ACN Ltd. (America's Cup Naples) - purpose company formed to handle the event - said: " Napoli wants to renew its image. To do this we must establish high target and the America's Cup World Series is the perfect opportunity. The two events we have decided to host cities and will put resources in Naples under the spotlight of international media. This agreement is an important step in the revival of Naples and the Campania Region . "

To manage the organization of events will be a consortium of local authorities, including the Campania Region, the Province of Naples, the City of Naples and the Union of Industrialists of Naples. Everyone looks to the future with the certainty that the two events in the program will have a great impact on the city of Naples.

The event will give the Italian public, which follows the fortunes of America's Cup for over twenty years, the opportunity to closely observe the best sailors in the world battle it out on futuristic AC45, expected to debut in the Italian waters on the occasion of the first event set in Naples.

Richard Worth, president of the America's Cup Event Authority (ACEA) said: " We are delighted that local governments have chosen the America's Cup World Series to revitalize the area of Bagnoli. All have shown a great passion for the City of Naples and a strong determination to bring the event in their region. We are sure that Naples will provide two fractions of the America's Cup World Series of absolute level, able to draw into the race and the city itself the attention of thousands of spectators . "
The first appointment with the AC World Series of Naples is scheduled between 7 and 15 April 2012. The event scheduled in 2013, however, will take place a month later, between 11 and 19 May and is currently regarded as the end of the AC World Series. After its conclusion, in fact, the team will fly to San Francisco for the Louis Vuitton Cup and the finals of the America's Cup This means that the champions will be crowned its own circuit 2012-2013 in Naples.

The AC World Series will offer short and narrow paths, designed to ensure competitive racing both the public crowded along the quays, the viewers. The new format of the event includes a test of pure speed, an event of match racing and fleet racing series that will be engaged on the starting line AC45 nine identical. The AC World Series is the only opportunity to see the protagonists America's Cup racing together.
@isailmedia.com

The AC45, catamaran equipped with rigid wing, is the precursor of the new generation of America's Cup boats.Capable of reaching speeds approaching 50 km / h, the AC45 is still agile enough to ensure competitive racing tactics and, as will those "designed" by America's Cup Race Management (ACRM).
They said
the Mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris, " The revival of Naples and its image will be also determined by the two stages of the America's Cup World Series. This is an exceptional event for this city does not only represent a major sporting event, but can become a dynamo for economic development by promoting employment and investment, tourism and trade, taking off on the international image of Naples ".
President of the Province of Naples, Luigi Cesaro: " The America's Cup is an extraordinary event that we must help to return to the ordinary. It must be a point of departure, not arrival, to aspire to become a capital of the Mediterranean. A change of gear and mindset, to revitalize an area where the inertia and the vetoes are often influenced all forms of development . "
President of the Campania Region, Stephen Caldoro: " We provide the competition the best in the world for this exciting event. A great success for Naples and Campania. A great job by all that reward, in terms of benefits, the city and the entire region. Raised, even with these initiatives, our image in the world. The challenge is open . "
Bagnolifutura President, Richard Maron: " I am convinced that the America's Cup World Series in 2012 and 2013 are a great opportunity for the development of the area because they can accelerate the release of European funds necessary to complete the structural public works now Bagnoli and almost ended up in the yard to start the first batch of the urban park . "
