iSail medias office just so happens to share the same waters and when I heard of the some 180 - 200 entries I put my Camera back pack on  grabbed the shins and hired a boat from our friends at Causeway marina . And set of to see it and capture for my self . A bit diferent piloting your own photo boat . I found Bub And he immediately radio the fleet I was the photo boat and the rest is history , parking my self on the committees boats starboard quarter I enjoyed the heart of the regatta access and views of the fleet as they were in pre start and for the start .Videos to follow .

 Just a week prior to this I was in Italy  covering the Americas Cup World Series in Naples . On a whole different level or is it ? I saw the same drive and skill in the eyes these young skippers braving the elements for some 7 hours out on the waters getting ever race they could in . No whining no im cold . No its raining These kids do one thing Sail and Sail for the right to represent our country in the Opti Worlds , No Short comings  at all . Girls as well as Boys competing in the same races  These may not be AC 45s  They may as well of been in the conditions these Sailors sailed in this week they all deserve at least a ride on one .

What brought me back day two was just the thought this was our best and brightes in my back yard on home waters these are the strenth of US sailing and what exactly there always talking about at the Cup races the future of Sailing These may not be the best and fastest there the best and most determined. There shore crews there brothers sisthers grandparnets and folks there team mates no corporate  hospitality here  Hot chowder and and pizza the la carte of the day . or a quick sandwich im between the trip from the finish to the next start . Fueled by a passion to win and a passion to sail . Dressed more as if they where going spring skiing than sailing .only there pfd vesst to tell the difference .

Umpiring 186 boats starting them,logistics on the wtaer keeping the course clear is no easy task .The fleet was broken in to three different groups basically colors and rotated each day. Each morning these kids and familys had to be up at dawn in measuring or the skippers meeting by 8;30am and on the water no later than 9:30 for the ten oclock line call.Not returning to shore until as late as four oclock on some days , This for four days in a row its not June here in Jersey and you wont  find the other infamous jersey name sake here on the water this acually takes true grit and discipline self disciplined Youth that find time some how to rip them selves away from the ipad iphone gamepad digital generation and continue on with the S generation .
This is the real Jersey Shore and she showed exactly why this is home and birth place of many a world class sailor.

Fatalities in Newport-Ensenada Race

Latitude 38 - 'Lectronic Latitude

SPECIAL REPORT: Fatalities in Newport-Ensenada Race
April 29, 2012 – Coronado Islands, Mexico

(Click on the photo to enlarge it.)

The Newport to Ensenada Race, which started on Friday, has reported that three sailors are dead and one is missing. © 2012 Lexus Newport-Ensenada Race

For the last two weeks, the California sailing community has been reeling over the loss of five of our own, and yesterday we lost at least three, but probably four, more. Rich Roberts, press officer for the 65th Annual Lexus Newport to Ensenada Race, reported late last night that the Hunter 376 Aegean apparently collided with a large vessel off the Coronado Islands.
"The first indication of the incident was at 1:30 a.m. Saturday when the boat's image vanished from the online race tracking system in place for the race," Roberts wrote in a press release. "A Coast Guard search was launched that led to discovery of the boat's wreckage, including the rear transom with the boat's name on it.
"An investigation was continuing, but it appeared the damage was not inflicted by an explosion but by a collision with a ship much larger than the 37-foot vessel."
A USCG helicopter directed a Vessel Assist boat to two bodies and a third was later retrieved. A fourth is still missing. The search for the fourth crewmember has resumed this morning. Names have not been released pending notification of the victims' families.
The annual race, which had 213 entries, started on Friday off Newport Beach. Many boats finished on Saturday, while the rest were expected in today. Roberts reports the weather conditions were lighter than usual in the area of the accident, with boats reporting 1-2 knots of wind.
"These would be the first fatalities in the 65-year history of the race," Roberts said.
We'll have more in tomorrow's edition of 'Lectronic Latitude.

After Yesterdays Seemingly Perfect Storm
The fleet and its Sailors were in high spirits as well as a larger Spectator fleet Started on an extreme low tide today . The fleet enjoyed near perfect yet chilling conditions with a stiff breeze, shifting to the south a bit a steady yet at some times light .

Sailngs Future . Opti Class is the stepping stone of Sailors its first the introduction to Sailing and then Sail racing Sailors in this class will graduate at 13 having mastered the Opti that leads for those who continue to 470 class ,Lazors, Fins etc.Some will join crewed fleets while others will stay solo one thing is for sure most in this regatta will be seeking out the new classes to continue on into, High school and then Collegiate levels .

Whats inspiring to see at these team trails is the dedicated Sailors and Parents Grandparents  that support the US and Worldwide efforts to sustain sailing programs like this . People taking there time to try and fulfill these young competitive racers dreams, By not only supporting there own kids but the network that hold its all together . With out this the up hill battle would lost easily . Sailing has felt the effects of the global market crisis . The first to feel the effects are usually programs like this . My hats off to all these parents and the Sailors them selves to do what they need to over come the hurdles and nurture a sport        once thought only for the idle rich .

@isailmedia.com
@isailmedia.com
  And there someone else who feel this way thought to be un approachable to exact opposite, that took time out of his schedule while visiting Manahattan this week on a days notice and a phone call dropped everything to come to the Brant Beach Yacht Club not to boost about his Americas Cup Carrier or to promote a new boat or Sail but to tell these kids just how inspired he was to here that 186 Sailors and there family's where competing in this stepping stone of a class the Opti Class. And that man is

  Dennis Conner's himself in the flesh . Sitting at a picnic table for all to approach .

@isailmedia.com
Most of this generation really don't know the history of the America's Cup . Almost skipping a whole generation while it was held hostage in the courts by the Swiss ,this generation suffered from it in a way. But now have there sites on defending it one day .. Dennis didn't tell war stories of the Cup .He shared his youth sailing and how important it is for all of us to support this sport no matter the out come of Cups or whos spending what or building this its the programs and classes Clubs and high school programs that need more than ever  any support we can lend.  You are Sailing he said you are the future .   Commenting he believes the nationality rule really should be considered in future cups . Why ?   So starting programs and Sailing hopefuls have more of incentive more of a national pride in there Racing in the vision to one day Sail in the Olympics or be lucky enough to defend the Cup that bears this great country name.     Thanks Dennis Thanks BBYC and thank you to The US Opti Dinghy Association  and most of all ,the family's and the Sailors that keep our Sport alive and thriving

MOD 70 KRYS OCEAN RACE’S | NEW YORK

USA set to host the KRYS OCEAN RACE

Start spreading the news ! New York will be start city for the new MOD70 class’s first ever trans-oceanic race when Race for Water (Steve Ravussin), Foncia (Michel Desjoyeaux), Edmond de Rothschild Group (Sebastien Josse), Spindrift Racing (Yann Guichard) and Oman Sail (Sidney Gavignet) set off on Saturday July 7th to take on the MOD 70 KRYS OCEAN RACE’S 2950 miles of racing between the evenly matched new one design, high speed 70 foot trimarans. Skippers Ravussin, Desjoyeaux, Josse, Guichard and Gavignet will lead their five strong crews across the North Atlantic to a finish in Brest, France.

Officially launched at the French Consulate in New York, today Thursday 26th April in the presence of the Consul M Philippe Lalliot and renowned American sailor Dawn Riley, the American program which forms the prelude to the MOD 70 KRYS OCEAN RACE promises a full complement of activities between June 28 and July 7 shared between Newport and New York.

From Newport to New York City

Ahead of this first true ocean challenge, a short prologue from Newport to New York should prove an exciting initial taster of what is to come, followed in New York by an afternoon of all-out sprints, the Speed Match.
A full menu of action and excitement is promised for the class’ inaugural visit to the USA, where the fleet musters in strength for the first time ever.

History in the making in Newport and New York

Though the MOD 70 KRYS OCEAN RACE will start from New York, the fleet will first establish itself in historic Newport, Rhode Island where the MOD70’s will be based at the Newport Shipyard marina between June 28th and July 2nd, not far from where the AC World Series finale runs 26th June to July 1st.

While based in Newport, the boats will be put through all their safety and technical scrutineering, vital checks which are all the more important given that once they are docked at New York’s North Cove Marina, the MOD70’s will be in full race mode, with no further work allowed to the boats beyond stocking them for the passage.

Prologue

For the five high speed trimarans, the 120 miles prologue races starts on Monday July 2nd from Newport - the world renowned sailing centre synonymous with America’s Cup - to a finish line off New York’s iconic Statue of Liberty where they would be due to finish July 3rd

From the eve of the USA’s Independence Day, through the July 4th festivities, the fleet will have their home at Manhattan’s tranquil North Cove Marina.

Then on the afternoon of July 5th the fantastic five match up to see who will be New York’s sprint kings on the Hudson River, when Race for Water, Foncia, Spindrift Racing, Edmond de Rothschild Group and Oman Sail will take part in a speed match virtually at the foot of the Statue of Liberty. Race Director Jacques Caraës will be supported by the very active Manhattan Sailing Club under Commodore and Race Committee Chairman Michael Fortenbaugh.

The Race is On

But the excitement will peak for sure on July 7th at 1100hrs (LOCAL) when the French Consul in New York, Philippe Lalliot will be joined by the Mayor of Brest François Cuillandre to fire the start gun which will set off the KRYS OCEAN RACE across the Atlantic to Brest.

The gun marks the start of the first great oceanic adventure for the MOD 70’s and the 30 crewmembers, making history as the world’s first fleet of identically matched ocean racing one design multihulls goes head to head.
Over a course measured at 2950 miles, some of the world’s best ocean racers – some who are already winners of the biggest offshore races and records in the world – will finally compete at thrilling high speeds, on even terms over the ensuing six or seven days, fighting to be first across Brest’s finish line, into the very heart of the historic Tonnerres de Brest nautical festival.

Philippe Lalliot, Consul General of France in New York City : « The world of sailing, synonymous with epic journeys, but also with perseverance and endurance, is certainly one of those worlds that fire your imagination the most. Suspense and emotions will no doubt be part of this new, nautical adventure. I look forward to its opening impatiently and wish it the greatest success. »

Dawn Riley, Chief Executive Officer Oakcliff Sailing New York : "The MOD70 class already is full of French Rockstars and I hope that we will see an American Team joining them shortly. We are all very excited that these multihull machines will be in New York."

\

Michael Fortenbaugh, Commodore Manhattan Sailing Club : "We have this incredible symbol which is the Statue of Liberty, a gift from the French. We always dreamed that someday there would be a race that would start from beneath it and connect with France, which New Yorkers are so closely linked to. This has great symbolic meaning and is the benchmark for future races."

Franck David, Chief Executive Officer Multi One Design S.A. : "Multi One Design's ambition is to build the ultimate sailing class of reference in the world…To start the MOD70 story with the KRYS OCEAN RACE in New York City is the exact representation of what we want to buil : an international circuit, with exiting host venues, combination of City Races and Offshore sailing adventures!"

The U.S. program for the KRYS OCEAN RACE 2012:

Newport:
June 28 : Deadline for arrival of MOD70
July 2 : Start of the prologue

New York City:
July 3 : Finish of the prologue
July 5 : Speed Match
